I feel like middle school is one of those key times in life where many students either take the path to become a life-long reader…or not. I pulled books that I frequently recommend from 7 different genres and put them in boxes at each of my 7 tables. It exposes readers to new genres that they may not seek out on their own. I set a timer like the one projected on the screen for five minutes. For the first 30 seconds, they can peruse the books in the box at their table and select a book. Then, they spend 4 minutes reading the book to see if it hooks them. With 30 seconds remaining, they make note of the title of the book and give it a ranking.

The Senator took these allegations seriously and believed they should be public. However, the woman in question made it clear she did not want this information to be public. Societal Level Strategies School violence can be prevented. Research shows that prevention efforts — by teachers, administrators, parents, community members, and even students — can reduce violence and improve the overall school environment. No one factor in isolation causes school violence, so stopping school violence involves using multiple prevention strategies that address the many individual, relationship, community, and societal factors that influence the likelihood of violence. Prevention efforts should ultimately reduce risk factors and promote protective factors at these multiple levels of influence.
Public health approaches focus on preventing violence before it starts and have been shown to effectively reduce school and youth violence. One strategy for addressing these individual risks are universal, school-based violence prevention programs, which have been proven to reduce rates of aggression and violent behavior among students. Several strategies to enhance these relationships have been found to be effective in reducing violence.
Some school-based programs also help students know how to appropriately and safely intervene to stop an escalating violent episode between peers. Many school-based programs and policies are also effective in helping teachers build healthy relationships, model nonviolent attitudes and behaviors, and contribute to a broader positive school climate, which in turn lowers the risk for school violence.

Help Your Students Decipher the Numbers! Sunday, October 7, After presenting at several conferences this week, I am finally sitting in the Orlando Airport waiting on my plane to go back home. As I am sitting here, I wanted to take some time to write about a great idea that was shared by one of my counseling colleagues a few weeks ago. Since I work with the virtual school in our district, I frequently meet with students who are taking online classes at their home school.
After finishing up my student visit, I decided to make a quick trip into the counseling office to check in with my colleagues before I left the building. Making the last round, I stopped in to say hello to the counselor that I work out with each week just to let her know that I would see her later in the week by the way, this woman is a beast! Conversing about our workout, I looked up and noticed a large whiteboard with information that resembled a student’s transcript.
Curious, I shifted the conversation to the whiteboard and asked her to tell me more about it. She went on to explain that she would give each student a print out of his or her transcript along with a dry erase marker to write out the courses and grades on the board. From the information on the whiteboard, the students would identify classes they needed to retake, learn how to calculate their overall GPA, and identify missing credits needed for graduation.
